photography notes

Sat Aug 23, 2008, 12:13 PM
learned some new stuff this week for night photographing (parties):

when using a flash (dSLR), the ugly overlightning can be removed by reducing the flash power (software correction).
Also, it is important to shoot with a big as possible diafragma combined with a shutter speed of 10-25 (depends strongly on your diafragma opening of course). Finally, exposure should be around 0 (or maybe +1). Dont forget to set the ISO on 800 or 1600.

It should also be possible to not even use a flash, but my experiences so far always resulted in failure due to the need of long shutter times.

I'm testing a lot of settings the last months and hope to introduce some pictures as resources in my deviantart works.

Okay first of all it's just wrong that no one has replie to this journal in months! Second, this is some helpful advice regarding photography. It's indeed hard to photograph at parties, especially due to the lighting(?) if they're taking place at night, indoors,in a basement or a large industrial building...

Guess it's off to your gallery to answer whether you've had any success with any test runs of this new, potential solution. After doing a little more research,i'll attempt this as well (or some of it if compatible) and offer a summary of the experiences.

:confused:Any notes for taking photos in snow, when the weather/sky is darker,or more gray due to it being overcast or around sunset?

Good luck with your endeavors, and if you've celebrated anything this time of year, hope it was enjoyable..

hey thanks a lot for the reply!
first of all, I would like to refer you to the following album where I did my first tryouts with these settings:
[link] (especially the last pictures in the dark)
My current struggle is mainly with the focus, since my 50mm lens does not autofocus on my camera, which can be very hard to combine all together with all the camera settings.
However, in the meantime I have found out some situations where I can leave out the flash, especially because of the better lens quality (of my non-autofocus lens), some pictures are right here: (all except the first image) [link]

darker locations mainly need a higher ISO setting, I would say sunny: 200 or lower, cloudy: 400. However, the combination with shutter time and diafragma opening allow you many settings with each different results, I'm not out myself yet how to handle it all.

My only really clear conclusion is that flash mainly kills every atmosphere and style of a possibly good picture, and should be avoided as much as possible (unless you own a very good flash, and/or use the 'rear' setting to only light up the flash just before shutting time)

My new years evening was quite fun, lets hope 2009 is as much, how about yours?

Nice to hear from you again and happy new year!
